《2011-2014-2017 The once dusty land – Images of Hengqin》
Located adjacent to Macau to its east, Hengqin Island is the largest of Zhuhai's 146 islands, with an area three times that of Macau. In 2009, the State Council of the People's Republic of China implemented the Hengqin Overall Development Plan. This initiative launched large-scale construction projects aimed at developing Hengqin into a demonstration zone for exploring new models of cooperation between Guangdong, Hong Kong, and Macau under the "One Country, Two Systems" framework.
Following this development, from 2011 to 2017, Mr. Frank Lei —Artistic Director of the Ox Warehouse and a veteran Macanese photographic artist—initiated a series of Hengqin-themed image exhibitions held once every three years. He consecutively organized: The Disappearing Neighboring Village: Hengqin Island Rediscovered Photography Exhibition (2011), At the Foot of Naobei Mountain: Today's Hengqin Image Creation Exhibition (2014), Three Years After Three Years: Photography Exhibition on the Changes of Hengqin (2017).
Through these projects, he led a group of Macau visual creators to continuously monitor and document the evolving landscape of Hengqin.
The book compiles the works from these three exhibitions. It chronicles the dramatic transformations in both the social landscape and human life during seven years of rapid development on Hengqin Island.
